Imām al-Ghazālī’s Abridgment of the Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn (The Revival of the Religious Sciences)
Course Description

The Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn is among the most influential books in the history of Islam. Written by Imām al-Ghazālī (d. 505 AH / 1111 CE), it represents one of the most ambitious attempts to integrate law, theology, ethics, worship, and spirituality into a unified vision of the religious life.

This advanced seminar is devoted to a close reading of the Iḥyāʾ in Arabic. Students will engage the text directly, examining Ghazālī’s language, arguments, sources, and intellectual method while exploring his reflections on knowledge, intention, worship, character formation, social conduct, spiritual diseases, and the path to God.

Particular attention will be given to Ghazālī’s effort to restore the inward meanings of religious practice and to reconnect outward conformity to the Sharīʿah with sincerity, self-discipline, and spiritual transformation.

Through guided reading and discussion, students will engage one of the foundational texts of Islamic civilization while strengthening their ability to read and analyze classical Arabic scholarship.
Why Study the Iḥyāʾ?

For nearly a thousand years, the Iḥyāʾ has shaped the religious, intellectual, and spiritual formation of scholars throughout the Muslim world. Few books have exercised comparable influence across the disciplines of law, theology, ethics, spirituality, and education.

To study the Iḥyāʾ is to engage one of the greatest syntheses of the Islamic tradition and to encounter a vision of Islam in which knowledge, worship, character, and spirituality are inseparable.

By the end of the course, students will:
  • Read substantial portions of the Iḥyāʾ in Arabic.
