Learn good character traits and purify yourself of bad ones.
Allah the Exalted extols His Prophet ﷺ saying “…surely you [O Muḥammad] are indeed of a magnificent character.” Our Mother ʿĀʾishah (ra) further expounded that “his character was [the embodiment] of the Qurʾān.” The Prophet ﷺ emphasized the significance of good manners informing us that “the believers with the most perfect faith are those who have the best character.” But what are the lofty traits that constitute noble character and how does one begin the arduous journey of adopting them? Seeking to elucidate this voyage, the 11th-century polymath al-Ghazālī discusses Islamic ethics at length in his magnum opus, Revival of the Religious Sciences. The author illuminates the purification process by teaching us how to diagnose and cure bad character. Furthermore, he delineates the most salient prophetic traits and the methods to embrace them.
