Participants will come to see the interconnection between America’s eras of growth and “Black Islam,” developing an idea of Islam’s past among African-Americans using it to inform them of its current and, perhaps, future condition.
In light of recent events, there appears to be a newfound desire to be more aware of African-Americans, their culture, and history. Within the newfound awareness, there is a desire to know more about the historical presence of African-American Muslims, or as some refer to it as “Black Islam.” This IOK Summer Course intends to introduce participants to “Black Islam” and how it has evolved. Participants will come to see the interconnection between America’s eras of growth and “Black Islam,” developing an idea of Islam’s past among African-Americans using it to inform them of its current and, perhaps, future condition.
